Bride & Prejudice: Confessions of a Bride

All she had wished for in the past few months was to look just the perfect, all in her imperfections!

Ever since the date of the wedding was finalized, she had drowned herself into a pool of thoughts. “What’s gonna happen? Will i find the perfect dress?  Will my skin be normal? What about those extra kilos i have? That belly fat peeking out from that gorgeous Lehenga (dress) she wants to wear? What if her makeup is a disaster? And those love handles? Why do we even call them that?” Ahh…”help me”, she said!

She had imagined this day about a million times, replaying each & every moment , visualizing herself twirling in that perfect wedding dress and dancing to the beats without being conscious about her body.

All she had wished for in the past few months was to look just the perfect, all in her imperfections!

She knew she wasn’t like any other bride. She was away from home, away from the love she needed to keep her calm and composed with all these random thoughts flying around her day & night. She knew as she walks down the aisle, there will be million of eyes staring at her , judging her on all those things she didn’t care about. She wanted to twirl & live the moment to the extent of the importance of a wedding in a girl’s life. She didn’t wanted those eyes staring at her make her feel any less special than she is. She knew she wasn’t like any other girl, she had big dreams, big hopes, she always stood up for herself. She wanted to bring a change, to get rid of all the society taboos a bride usually goes through on her big day. The perfect mannequin figure, the perfect hair, perfectly glowing fair skin and so on.” The list never ends!

As she stepped into her big day, she felt weak. She felt like she had lost the love she had for herself. She didn’t had the same confidence she had gained in all those years , she forgot how to embrace her beauty and to celebrate the moment. She wasn’t the same girl anymore!

All she had wished for in the past few months was to look just the perfect, all in her imperfections!

She fell in love with the beautiful intricate zari work on the perfect red wedding dress she always wished to own. She hoped her face would brighten up with each & every piece of jewelry she had picked up by herself. But she was scared! Scared from those eyes who might not love the things she loved the most. The dress, the jewelry, her pretty smile underneath that puffy scared face and above all the day itself. Her big day!

She wanted those eyes to love her the most on that day. She wanted to hear that she looked pretty. That she looked lovely in the wedding dress she had picked. To take pride in her accomplishments and her achievements and tell her that she’s ready to take the big step in her life.

She kept staring at the mirror, waiting for someone’s approval. As she felt deeper into the thought, she felt sick to her stomach. Random thoughts buzzing around like flies that she cannot get rid of. She felt disgusted about the extra weight she had around her waist, those love handles to be seen through the deep cut blouse she loved, the tiredness in her eyes from trying to manage everything around her. She felt like had lost her real self.

All she had wished for in the past few months was to look just the perfect, all in her imperfections!

She pressed the rewind button thinking about all those hours and days she had spent in the gym trying to lose those extra kilos. The time she spend calling hundreds of people everyday from an entirely different part of the world to make arrangements for her own wedding. For a moment, she had forgotten all such situations when she had stood up strong for herself, each & every time someone pushed her down.  She had build her confidence by working on herself for years. Does all that don’t count at all? Is this thought going to ruin her big day she has imagined since she was a little girl?……….

Bringing her back to the moment, once again she saw herself in the mirror in a way she had always seen her, strong & confident ,but, had forgotten it all in the urge to match the stereotype & to get a reassurance from the people around her. She realized she was wrong! She grasped her confidence back, once again loved every bit of herself as a bride and happily walked down the aisle!

But there’s still a part of her that wishes to hear from the people she loved that she made a beautiful bride, perfect with all her imperfections, not less pretty than any other bride on this planet! But may be it’s too late now, the moment has gone!

Sometimes it’s very hard to appreciate others, specially the ones who are family & close to you because we live in a world of assumptions where we expect others to understand on their own. But what we don’t realize is that not every situation in life has that power to make others understand how much we love & care about them! If you love someone, show them! Even if they are aware, tell them again that you love them! She didn’t needed anyone’s approval of how beautiful she is as a person or as a women or as a bride, but her ears were waiting to hear that on her big day.

Every bride has her imperfections, her flaws & that’s what makes every bride unique and special in her own self. Sometimes the people around you forget to embrace your real authentic beauty & who you really are, but if they could, then that is the best gift they can give her for her new life!

This is for all brides/ bride-to-be’s , don’t let anyone dull your sparkle just because they didn’t love you the way you wanted to be loved or tell you what a beautiful bride you make. Love yourself, celebrate & embrace each & every part of your body, take pride in your accomplishments! People around should love you for who you are, not for your dark skin or those extra kilos, or even if your makeup is messed up on your wedding. Embrace your real self and let them try too (if they can’t then they need to come out of the stereotype bubble, not you !) Because what matters is what’s inside you.

To be contd.

Until next,

The Urbanista ♥
